There has always been a lot of fantasy about Grant, some of it perpetuated by local students of history. The best book about Grant is his own autobiography, which is available at the County Library and is a darned good read.
The low point in Grant’s career was when he was stationed in Eureka at Fort Humboldt.
Yes, and he missed his wife and children terribly. Apparently he would have resigned even without the drinking issue. He went back to the Midwest and when the war broke out he was given a command and never looked back.
