Short Ribs and Random Thoughts July 31 2017

We missed a week due to a near-nervous breakdown I experienced from the dual evils of having my TIVO go out again so I could only watch TV in the kitchen and, concurrently, a totally unrelated mishap involving my computer KEYBOARD which stopped functioning. The emails kept coming in but I couldn’t delete them or respond. Wonderful Cory from Cornerstone Computers fixed the keyboard in about a minute but it took Suddenlink SIX DAYS to fix the TIVO. I heard from four other people in the area that theirs was out too but S’link hates the term “outage”.

-You want loyalty? Get a dog.  Here’s POLITICO’S  read on Trump’s record on loyalty. Read it HERE.

-Have I railed  lately about the Zoo charging $100 to attend the Zootini?  I cant recall how much it was last year but I bought tickets for myself and a friend and didn’t think twice about it so it couldn’t have been that much. I  understand the  canopy will be expensive but sheese!  I was on the Zoo board when they were deciding whether to charge admission at all.  Those were the days!  Look for them to propose a big hike in admission fees. Well, I propose it’s time for the rest of the County, not just Eureka, to bear the cost of this REGIONAL tourist attraction.

-If Jeff Sessions isn’t the LEAST impressive person the in Federal government,  I don’t know who is.  There are counter clerks at Six Rivers Forest with more presence and composure. There are TSA baggage inspectors at the airport who inspire more confidence. But NO ONE including Jeff Sessions should be humiliated in the way Trump is humiliating him. Is he a masochist? We already know what Trump is…….BTW I hear that if you Google “Scaramucci divorce” you get some interesting stuff.

-BTW if you listened carefully, Trump’s announcement on firing Priebus/Hiring Kelly reflected his thinking perfectly.  He referred to Kelly as a “Star”, reflecting his belief that he’s still a reality TV star, and referred to Priebus as “a good man”, meant to be damning with faint praise.  IF he ever figures out that he’s supposed to be the President of the United States, he’ll realize that “a good man” in government is ten times more valuable than a “star”.

-What is the idea behind the stupid Sam Jackson commercials where he’s singing “Let’s Stay Together”? HE CAN’T SING!!!  Was that the whole point, to show that there are Black guys that cant sing?  We already knew that.

-Will Kid Rock run for  President? Swear to God he’s more qualified than Don the Con. The Kid (Robert Richie) even has a similar bio.  Both were  born into wealth (the Kid’s father owned several auto dealerships) and, like Trump, he borrowed money from the old man to start his career ($7500 to record an album). He’s not been known to file serial bankruptcies like Trump so he probably knows more about business  and government. He’s not quite as crazy as Ted Nugent, says he supports gay marriage. Maybe he’ll  reconcile with Pamela Anderson so she can be our First Lady. No crazier than what’s going on now.

-ANOTHER BOS SCREWUP- Ain’t it wonderful to hear that, 12 years after entering into a consent agreement, the County is finally going to abide by the ADA?  This County is very anti-ADA,  a function of poor education. Jason Singleton was either hounded out of town or left for greener pastures so I don’t know who you go to to file an ADA suit. There are several prominent businesses in flagrant violation  that need to be sued.  This is the same BOS, more or less, that brought us the 12-year GPU update and who hired an incompetent as Public Defender.  We STILL don’t know why he was hired. Everyone on the BOS, with the exception of Mike Wilson,  has had at least  one term already. ALL of them should move on when their current term ends.  It’s not supposed to be a lifetime job!

Just one more thought- who would you want next to you  in a foxhole,   Donald Trump or John McCain?  I thought so.

Sinclair and the News (I Actually Watched FOX!)

With all the anticipation of SInclair Broadcasting, the new owners of KAEF,   bringing into our market a bunch of right-wing propaganda apparently to be served up with our local news, I thought i had better check out the current offering, so I taped Friday’s  “North Coast News”.

I haven’t watched local news TV for years because it always seemed to be two or three days behind the online sources but it was kind of interesting. The anchors are a beefy male and a tiny woman, both of whom have difficulty pronouncing names that they could have figured out if they’d taken a couple of minutes to rehearse. The broadcast is done at breakneck speed to give a sense of urgency, or maybe to disguise the fact that they had no news to cover. (This was a Friday night, after all.)  The propaganda machine has not affected them so far; there was a segue into national news which was a brief recounting of the healthcare flop.  They were not afraid to criticize Trump when he deserved it (the Boy Scout speech) to I guess we’ll have to wait awhile for the Sinclair -style news.

Emboldened, I actually watched Fox news the other night and I was pleasantly surprised. The show was called “The Five” and was hosted by Bret Baier, who has always been the most reasonable of their commentators. I actually enjoyed it!  You never know.

Ryan and The Mooch

We missed a few posts this week because of technical issues. Here a story I really didn’t want you to miss. Just in.  Read it HERE.

Ain’t it odd that while Trump flies off to rant to a crowd about the evils of gang warfare, he’s hiring staff  in the  White House (YOUR White House) who operate on about the same level?.

One Eighth Of The Way Through The Trump Presidency

The past six months have demonstrated that the poor judgment of those voters who elevated Don the Con to the Presidency definitely had consequences.  We are stuck with a President who has no moral compass, no positions, no philosophy, who doesn’t seem to know the difference between reality and fantasy,  who blames everyone else for his failures,  and who appears to have been hypnotized or lobotomized by Vladimir Putin. Why else would he CONTINUE to deny that the Russians hacked our elections and, worse, refuse to take any actions to prevent it from happening again in 2018?

His miserable performance re: the GOP healthcare attempt shows that The Great Dealmaker wouldn’t know a great deal if he hit one in the road. Other Presidents get off their butts and make phone calls. Donnie whines and golfs.

Add to this the fact that this is the most SECRETIVE Presidency ever. What was he doing meeting alone with Russian officials in the Oval Office? He seems to like situations where only the Russians can keep records of what was said.  He’s met with Putin for three hours (including the G20 dinner) and the American people have NO IDEA what was said. Sad!

Finally, Trump fatigue has set in. His 37% or whatever it is support has topped out and  is subsiding. People are tired of the lies, the  hysteria,  the  shifting stories,  the endless corruption,  his untalented relatives occupying positions for which they have no qualifications, his laziness in filling Federal positions and his delusion that sending out Tweets is an acceptable substitute for real government.  Eventually,  he will render himself irrelevant. Congress and everyone else will just start working around him, ignoring him when they can.  If he survives the  Russia inquiry he will live out the remainder of his term barricaded  in the White House, watching Fox News and blaming everyone else for his poor performance. That’s about all he’s good for, besides kissing up to our enemies.  Essentially, we have no President.

Had enough? So have I.

Short Ribs and Random Thoughts- July 20 2017

There’s just too much news! Ye’r killing me.

The George Strait Phenom-  Everyone, even the New Yorker,  is celebrating Strait, whose  longevity in country music is amazing.  I have a G Strait story myself. During my Hawaii years, I had a duplex in Waialua, on the North Shore of Oahu, not far from  Schofield  Barracks.  The duplex across from mine had been rented in the past by G Strait when he was a young soldier at Schofield.  The owners, Mr and  Mrs Foo, told me that ever after when he came through Honolulu, he took them out to dinner. I told this to a homeless lady in the Roy’s parking lot who was wearing a George Strait T-Shirt. She said I made her day.

“End of Season”-I haven’t even got used to the idea that it’s summer yet, and the stores are advertising “end of season” sales. That’s so wrong!

The Kitchen Trial-  I usually don’t comment on the local crime scene but I want to note that in the hubbub surrounding this case, the fact that the young man whose testimony  is most crucial is an HONOR STUDENT.  Can you imagine living though that chaos ?  I hope someone helps him with college.

Two Things You Don’t Know About Me-  I have never taken a selfie.  And I have never watched Game of Thrones.

The Parklets Abide-  remember when Rob Holmlund was first pushing the idea of parklets in Eureka?  I objected to losing more parking in Old Town.  A couple of days ago there was a followup in the Times-Standard.  Apparently a volunteer force from  Old Town businesses was entrusted to monitor parking and concluded that, hey, there’s PLENTY of parking in Old Town.  I’m a big fan of Mr Holmlund but my experience has been different.   The DAY BEFORE the piece came out in the T-S,  I tried to pick up a watch from Ten Window Williams.   When I had dropped it off, I found parking within a block.  When I came back (at 3 pm, carefully avoiding the lunchtime rush) there was nothing on the whole block except a half-space not big enough for an Isetta. Remember those? I ended up parking illegally on the sidewalk. I’m looking at having PT or surgery or both to improve my mobility but even if you’re not disabled THERE’S NOT ENOUGH PARKING IN OLD TOWN. Period. End of story.

Tour de France–  Do you watch it?  It’s the best low-rent travelogue on the air. Sometimes I even see places where I’ve been. It’s great TV.

Benbow construction continues-  the $10M revamp of the Benbow was supposed to be completed July 17 but is now expected to continue until October.  It will be gorgeous and accessible then but right now the rear entrance is no more and those dreadful steps up the front are the only access.  I love the Benbow but we’ve cancelled a birthday party and I’m sure they’re losing a lot of other  business too. Let’s hope they finish up fast.

I’m a Democrat and not at all religious,  but last night I found myself praying for Sen. John McCain.  I really did.
