SF Housing about to get even pricier

San Francisco only built one home for every 10.4 new jobs created in 2016, a recent report says, after comparing new data from the San Francisco Planning Department to estimates by the U.S. Census.

A new report from housing site Curbed S.F. arrived at the ratio of homes to jobs by comparing the 27,048 new jobs created in the city in 2016, as tallied by the Planning Department, to the only 2,600 new homes the Census estimates were built during the same period.

Curbed notes that while the Census and the Planning Department categorize job and population growth slightly differently, “unless the Census somehow missed 10,000 new homes, it’s not going to make a big difference.”

Some other takeaways from the Planning Department’s “2016 Commerce and Industry Inventory” report, released last week:

  • Total wages in San Francisco shot up 6 percent overall in 2016, to $71.5 billion total, or a median wage of $101,640, a massive jump from the median wage of $83,570 in 2011.
  • Building permits issued citywide fell 2 percent to 29,117 new permits.
  • Job growth went up 4 percent in 2016 across San Francisco, creating a new record of 703,230.

IN PRAISE OF EUREKA BOOKS- I have a hard time shopping there because of the limited parking but I found a spot across the street.  My friends in Eugene, whom  I usually send Loleta Cheese to, laid down the law.  “NO Cheese”!  So I took a chance on Eureka Books.  I was surprised there were no local calendars, except for the Locally Delicious one. So I ended up sending them a box of cookbooks some of which were old vintage ones from the ‘sixties.  The EB folks packed them and mailed them so I didn’t even have to carry them a back to the car, post office etc. God Bless Eureka Books.

Our Fake President is holding a self-congratulatory rally while he gleefully kicks 13 million people off of healthcare,  and collects a fortune for himself under the new tax laws.  As someone said yesterday, he ran as a populist but governs as a plutocrat. How many people will have to suffer before it becomes clear that this would-be Emperor has no clothes?

FAREWELL, ALDO BONGIO- When I was in the habit of attending the BOS meetings,  Aldo was a frequent speaker. He was impassioned and sometimes went on little too long. Only Roger Rodoni could get him to sit down. He was a very nice man, very good-hearted,  and his son built the house next to mine. I’d like to think he and Roger  are reunited now.  Carry on, both of you.

A FRIEND OF THE BLOG tipped me off that I was posting links that couldn’t be followed.( I can’t tell from this end).  Trying to avoid that  from now on but if you  have ANY problems PLEASE let me know.

WORST PLACES in SF to Park Your Car

Downtown, Civic Center and the Tenderloin have the dubious distinction of being the areas of San Francisco that have the highest likelihood of car break-ins, according to an analysis from parking app company SpotAngels.

The company merged public safety data about the rate of criminal activity with their own proprietary information about the number of parking spaces available in specific neighborhoods to create a ratio of break-ins to number of parking spots for 2016.

Downtown, Civic Center and the Tenderloin came out ahead in this measure at a ratio of 0.35 break-ins per the number of parking spots. Not far behind are North Beach/Telegraph Hill and Golden Gate Park which had a ratio of 0.29 and 0.28 respectively. In the pure number of total break-ins, Soma/ South Beach/ Mission Bay are ahead with 5,261 break-ins, which make up 17 percent of total incidents in the city.

On the other end of spectrum are largely residential neighborhoods on the Western and Southern edge of the city, the Outer Sunset, Parkside and Crocker-Amazon, which had a break-in ratio of 0.02.

Even in neighborhoods known for high incomes and high housing prices, the rate of break-ins may be high. Seacliff, for example, which is known for large estates overlooking the Pacific Ocean has a break-in ratio of 0.22.

“The big take away here is that, even in a posh zip code, you shouldn’t leave your valuables visible in your car,” said SpotAngels co-founder Aboud Jardaneh.

According to the SpotAngels data, San Francisco had 27,104 total break-ins in 2016, 98 percent of which go unsolved. While the company is still tallying data for 2017, the report showed a 17 percent increase in break-ins from January to October from the year before. Jardaneh said one neighborhood that has seen a big increase in break-ins year-over-year has been the Mission.

In some of the neighborhoods, break-ins were concentrated in specific blocks. Leading the way there was the 500 block of John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park, which had 285 break-ins, totaling nearly 33 percent of all break-ins within the park.

Coming in second was 1000 Point Lobos Ave. in Seacliff, which saw 267 break-ins making up a whopping 63.78 percent of the total incidents within the neighborhood. Visitors in SoMa/South Beach/Mission Bay may do well to avoid the 800 block of Mission St. which saw 205 total break-ins.
