This will be quoted widely. From the WAPO, read it HERE.

JARED and CHRISTIE
From POLITICO. It’s long been clear that Jared and the Kushners are upset with Chris Christie for his role in convicting Jared’s dad. Read the whole piece HERE
HARBOR GROUP MEETS WEDNESDAY Jan 30
Every month or so Charles Bean of the Humboldt Bay Harbor Working Group sends me a beautiful poster about their upcoming lunch. I always have problems working with what they send and today was even worse than usual. PDF does not play nice with WordPress. Anyway, their speaker at noon on Wednesday at the Cookhouse is Larry Oetker, and the lunch is pot roast. Contact Charles at 441-1974.
AN ART GALLERY IN HENDERSON CENTER!
Well, why not? There’s a new addition to everyone’s favorite neighborhood. The F Street Gallery, operated by artist Kathryn Stotler, is located just across from Joanne’s and catty-corner from the Fresh Freeze. It’s great to see a new business opening up there. Here’s her announcement.
F Street Gallery, in Henderson Center, Eureka features contemporary abstract art of the Pacific North Coast. Officially opened in January 2019, the gallery, located at 3122 F Street, showcases the work of artist / owner Kathryn Stotler. Her studio, where she paints local geological forms with a unique magnification, is located in the gallery as well. Both are open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 to 4:00 as well as by appointment.
The building is a small Tudor revival house built in 1926 allegedly by construction students. The Stotlers purchased it nearly twenty years ago and it served as a psychotherapy office for most of that time.
,When her husband retired Stotler was delighted to learn that the building’s zoning allowed for it to be an art gallery. Now the house provides space for her large paintings as well as smaller works, unframed originals, and cards.

SHORT RIBS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS Jan 28 2019
Quote of the week, From the New York Times: Bret Stephens nails it: “Instead of building a wall that Mexicans will pay for, Americans are going unpaid for a wall that’s not going to be built…” (NYT) Thank God the shutdown is over, for now. |
Here’s some local news about OYSTERS from the Lost Coast Outpost that you’ve probably seen but need to be reminded of. It’s about OYSTERS! Read it HERE.
Also in local news, you all know that the Angel of Death visited Eureka last weekend and anyone who ever knew J Hockaday and Tony Smithers is sad. Further in local news, the Times – Standard carries about the fifteen annual notice that KEET is on the verge of foundering. When I first moved back here, in ’93, I dutifully joined KEET but somehow over the years I dropped my membership and stopped watching! The only thing I watch on KEET these days is an occasional Frontline. I believe there should be a PBS but I think a lot of other people have abandoned them in favor of cable.
Here’s a reminder of the cluelessness if not heartlessness of Trump’s 81-year old probably senile billionaire Commerce Secretary, Willbur Ross, who frequently falls asleep during meetings.. You’re not still patronizing Carl’s Junior, are you??? Read it HERE.
And thank God the shutdown is over, for now. How about that Nancy Pelosi, who handled Trump like a misbehaving puppy? Didn’t you love her “Please don’t throw me in that briar patch” routine while the entire Democratic contingent and a few Republicans stood up to Trump, who put a million people out work and countless others in hardship and even danger FOR NOTHING. The. Worst. President. Ever, Wonder what evil he’ll come up with when he’s finished licking his wounds? Here’s a brilliant cartoon:

FOOD STUFF: The ROAST PORK RECIPE that ran in Parade on Jan 14 was life-changing. I’d fallen into the habit of just throwing pork roasts into the slow cooker. No more!. We made this and it was SO GOOD and although bourbon is one of the ingredients, it doesn’t taste like bourbon at all! Try it. You’ll like it! The recipe is HERE
MORE FOOD STUFF: GREAT piece about FISH you will want to read. It’s HERE.
The ICHIBAN Revisited: We dropped in last week for dinner and had a mixed experience. The food was good, the service was pretty raggedy. The place was about half full and the ambiance, as usual was quiet and pleasant. We ordered two sushi’s (is that grammatical?), and two bento dinners, which included soup. After quite a while, the server brought ONE sushi (the unagi) and two lukewarm soups. We didn’t bother to send the soup back because we figured we were about to get the other sushi momentarily. Wrong! We waited another fifteen minutes during which the five staff members we had counted, chose to absent themselves. We were seated near the front desk and the phone kept ringing and ringing with no one answering it. Finally the server returned with the OTHER sushi (California roll) and our bentos all at once. I would have preferred the sushis first, THEN the bentos, but I’m getting to be an old grinch. The food WAS good. He had the chicken katsu and I had the “Golden Fish” which was perfectly fried and heated up well. Generous portions. Definitely worth a return trip. No website.
THE KABOB CAFE´ REVISITED, TOO: The last time we had tried them I was terribly disappointed with the gyros meat, which was full of GRISTLE! I HATE gristle! I am happy to report that they dumped their bad supplier or whatever the problem was and the gyros has returned to its former Olympian heights of excellence. The Kabob really is a gem. Visit them soon in Valley West. Website is HERE.
Finally, another great quote , this from Adm. James Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commender of NATO: “The President famously does not read the voluminous policy papers with which he is presented. From the perspective of a military mind, this woud be akin to a car refusing to be gassed up.”

AN OVERVIEW OF KAMALA HARRIS
From POLITICO, here’s a portrait of the California senator. Read it HERE.
For my part, I’m impressed with Harris, but not committed. I have a sentimental spot for Uncle Joe, for one. We have SO many choices! One I am NOT enthusiastic about is Tulsi Gabbard. She has a sketchy history of being involved in a cult on the Big Island and doesn’t seem to be a team player. Beto O’Roarke turned me off mightily with that Instagram or whatever it was of him getting his teeth cleaned..NO!!
Jerry Brown’s Last Hurrah
From the SF Chronicle, a fitting farewell. Read it HERE.
SHORT RIBS AND RANDOM THOUGHTS Jan 14 2019
OUR FAKE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAKE BORDER CRISIS. WHO could have believed that ONE ignorant, demented person could wreak such havoc on so many innocent lives? And his “let’em eat cake” attitude is getting old really fast. From the New Yorker, Jeffrey Toobin’s take on the legalities of the shutdown is horrifyingly pessimistic. It’s right HERE. And from Salon, the polls are worrying, or should be, for Trump. Read their take HERE. From the WAPO, the “shutdown ” is selective. Read about it HERE.
And now it turns out that this whole “border crisis ” and the Trump-ordered government shutdown are a fake crisis intended to divert attention from the fact that Our Fake President is being investigated as a traitor. Keep your eye on the ball.
AND it turns out Trump has been hiding the notes from his talks with his sweetie Putin. The WAPO has the story HERE. Ya can’t make this stuff up. Unfortunately.
Trump’s talk on Afghanistan has our allies on edge. Check it out HERE;
HERE’s Lucian Truscott’s take on how the end will come. HE’s backing anxiety. Read about it HERE.
BEST RESTAURANTS IN EUREKA ? Here are MY choices, in no particular order: Brick & Fire, Siam Orchid, Bella Italia, Humboldt Bay Bistro, Ichiban, the AA and the Stuf’d Potato. What are YOUR picks?
BEST RESTAURANTS in the COUNTRY? YELP rates a few restaurants kind of close to us as being in the top 100. One is a tiny Middle Eastern place in Santa Clara called Achilles that doesn’t even have a website. Another is ALSO a Middle-Eastern place in Rocklin called Wally’s Cafe, also without a website. In Roseville, they list Guy’s Café , menu HERE,
Finally, they list the Big H Deli in Fairfield, ALSO with no website. What I call “middle -Eastern”, they’re calling “Mediterranean”, probably an easier sell. And what’s up with al these places deciding that they can make do with Facebook, no website? GET OFF FACEBOOK, PEOPLE!! FB is going to be out of business soon, anyway.
Have you had the misfortune of having to deal with the world’s worst website, that of our garbage company, Recology? All I want is for my payments to be deducted automatically like my PG&E payments, my cable payments and ALL the others but NOOOO, Recology keeps sending me a paper notice and requiring me to log into their website JUST TO PAY MY BILL. I just had my fourth conversation with their office staff . This time they couldn’t even get the damn website to work and advised me to call back. They say they have constant complaints. HOW did these guys get the franchise?? Is there NO local company that could handle this??? Next time it comes up for bid I hope they have some competition.
